The most exciting thing about summer rolling around is the idea of laying out by the pool or beach, with your favorite book and drink in hand, getting that enviable golden tan. If you’re more adventurous, you may have plans to go on a trip with your friends or family, perhaps a weekend getaway to Disneyland.
An inevitable, but overlooked aspect of summer fun is the possibility of getting sunburnt. You don’t want to ruin all your fun by feeling sore and having your skin peeling under the cute outfits you’d been planning for months. If you want to heal from sunburn fast, here’s what you should do:
Cool Off
If you’ve experienced sunburn before, you know your skin will be feeling constant warmth emanating from it. To soothe yourself, take a cold bath to cool down your skin. Showers can put too much pressure on your already-sore skin; you don’t want to make it worse.
Aloe is your best friend
Aloe Vera has cooling properties and acts as an anti-inflammatory agent on your irritated skin. While there are aloe vera gels available in the supermarket, the best thing you can do for yourself is to get the gel straight from the plant. It’s really easy and so efficient in calming down the burning sensation in your skin.
Moisturize
After sunburn, your skin will be dry and peeling; slather on lots of moisturizer and continue to do so. This will help restore the moisture that has been dried out of your skin and sooth you in the process too. It’ll be a bonus if you apply a lotion that’s infused with aloe vera.
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
Drinking water seems to be the solution to everything, just as it works to alleviate the effects of sunburn too. Water will return the moisture that has been dried out of your skin and the rest of your body as well. Prevent getting dehydrated at all costs.
Let it be
It’s difficult to just watch your skin peel, crack, and blister. But this may be the best thing you can do to it—the damage has been done; now you must let it heal on its own. Apart from applying moisture and aloe vera periodically, don’t pick at your skin. It’s been through enough!
If you’re thinking of living out your childhood fantasy of going for a Disneyland tour and want to avoid the hassle of healing your sunburn, you can take precautions.
To avoid sunburn, consider these:
- Avoid the sun during its peak time
- Wear a hat or cap
- Wear sunscreen—reapplying periodically—and get SPF-infused lip balm
- Use a wet towel to cool down
- Drink plenty of water regularly
- Wear loose clothes that cover your arms and legs
- Protect your eyes with sunglasses
